Renova Prescription AntiAging Medication - Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Renova prescribed?
Renova is prescription medication prescribed to reduce fine wrinkles, roughness and discoloration on facial skin (as part of a comprehensive program of skin care and sun avoidance).
Why is Renova sometimes called retinoic acid?
Retinoic acid is the generic name for Renova. The generic name represents the medications nonproprietary or chemical name, whereas, the brand name is the name a pharmaceutical give to a medication for marketing purposes.
How does Renova work?
Renova (tretinoin emollient cream 0.05%) contains the same active ingredient as Retin-A. While Retin-A is formulated for acne-prone skin, Renova is a rich emollient cream developed specifically for treating wrinkle and fine lines, surface roughness, brown spots, surface roughness and stretch marks. Most non prescription skin care products only act as dermal exfoliators, simply removing surface skin and allowing underlying tissue to rise to the surface. Renova does not promote exfoliation. The medication works at the cellular level to modify gene expression, subsequent protein synthesis, surface skin growth and differentiation.
When damaged by the sun's ultraviolet rays, the dermis tends to shrink which results in the outer layer to wrinkle. Renova smooths fine lines by acting on the cells of the dermas, the lower layer of the skin. The final result, is a younger rejuvenated looking skin. Renova is not a clever cover-up but a potent prescription medicine that produces more supple, smoother skin with fewer wrinkles. Renova also diminishes the brown spots that so commonly appear with aging.
How is Renova applied?
Renova is applied once daily usually at bedtime. Individuals should only use a small enough amount to lightly cover the affected region ( squeeze a pearl-sized amount or about 1/4" diameter of Renova onto your fingertip, using more than a pearl-sized amount will not increase your results and may cause irritation ).
Prior to using Renova individuals are asked to wash their face with a mild soap and the wait approximately 20 minutes prior to dabbing a small amount of the prescription cream on your face. Please be careful to avoid your eyes, nostril, ears, lips or any open sores or irritated areas.
After applying Renova, you can apply a moisturizer; however, for best results, wait one hour in between if possible.
What If I miss a dose of Renova?
If you miss a dose wait until the appropriate time the next evening and resume treatment as usual.
When will I begin to see the benefits of Renova?
Most patients will begin to see positive results i.e. their skin becoming smoother and softer within the first two months, by three months users may notice a reduction in fine wrinkles and brown spots beginning to fade. Additional benefits become more apparent with continued use. Individuals need to be compliant or use the medication directly as prescribed for the best results.
What if I do not notice any immediate improvement?
If you do not notice any immediate improvement, or there appears to some new blemishes do not despair. Individuals may need to apply the medication for up to 4-6 weeks before noticing any improvements. Just continue with the prescribe amount, increasing the application dose or frequency may result in an irritation of the skin and will not improve the beneficial potential of the medication.
Does Renova reverse the signs of aging?
Renova is the only prescription cream proven in clinical studies to reduce the signs of photodamage associated with long term sun exposure and aging. However, it cannot be said that the medication actually "reverses the signs of aging."
How does the use of Renova compare with the use of Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs)?
There have been no clinical studies that compare the use of Renova to AHAs. Renova is the only prescription cream approved by the Federal Drug Administration to reduce fine lines i.e. crow's feet and brown spots.
May individuals use cosmetics while I am using Renova?
Yes, individuals may use cosmetics while being treated with Renova. Make sure you thoroughly cleanse the areas of your face where you wish to apply the medication. If you experience excessively dry skin, you may want to use petroleum jelly or another moistener during the day.
May individuals use other facial skin products while using Renova?
Individuals should discuss the use of other facial products with their physician. Many products i.e. medicated or abrasive facial soaps/shampoos, hair dyes, hair removal products, cosmetics that have a strong drying effect, products with high concentrations of alcohol including astringents, spices, etc.
Should patients using Renova avoid sunlight exposure?
Individuals should keep exposure to sunlight and sun lamps to a minimum. If you have sunburn, or any other skin irritation do not use the medication until you skin has fully recovered. Use of sunscreen products (at least SPF 15) and protective clothing over treated areas is recommended when exposure to the sun cannot be avoided. In addition, weather extremes, such as excessive wind or cold conditions, may cause a reaction with the use of the medication.
